Telematics: The smart way to collect data

The type of telematics: directly from the manufacturer or by means of ODB dongles ?

There are basically two options for obtaining data from the vehicle: 1) In modern vehicles, the data is collected directly by the vehicle and sent to the manufacturer. This data can be accessed directly or via a data broker. or 2) “Dongles” for data collection are installed in the ODB2 interface of the car and can collect and send data there. We prefer the manufacturer’s data. These are more reliable and provide more accurate data, because the good or not so good installation of the “dongle” can make quite a difference in the quality of the collected data.

Telematics helps with vehicle maintenance and care

In addition, telematics can also help plan vehicle maintenance and repair. By monitoring vehicle data such as oil levels, tyre pressure and engine temperature, potential problems can be identified early and fixed before expensive repairs are needed. For companies that own a fleet of vehicles, telematics can also help improve overall fleet productivity and efficiency.

By analysing data such as fuel consumption, speed, braking and acceleration, telematics can help promote safer and more efficient driving. For drivers and fleet managers, telematics offers other benefits as well. One of these is the ability to track the location of the vehicle in real time. This enables better utilisation and route planning for more efficient use of fuel and time, as traffic jams can be avoided, among other things.

Telematics & Data: Data collection is not equal to monitoring

If you are not yet familiar with telematics, you would think that this data collection and analysis is only there to monitor the driver of the vehicle. But this is not the case. Rather, it is about minimising and adjusting costs for the company and the fleet management company. Costs can be avoided through the application of data. For example, if less fuel is used or the vehicle is better maintained, overall costs can be reduced. There is also the possibility to start a competition within the company where the most efficient driver is awarded for his good performance during the month.

Overall, telematics offers a wide range of benefits for drivers and fleet managers. If you would like to learn more about how telematics can help you use your vehicles more efficiently and safely, feel free to contact us. We will be happy to help you!
